Orthodontic Emergencies

While not an emergency, food caught between your teeth and braces can be uncomfortable. Gently use dental floss to remove the food, or try an interproximal brush or toothpick for dislodging.

After getting braces, some soreness and tenderness when eating are normal for three to five days. Saltwater rinses or gum-numbing gel like Orajel can provide relief.

If needed, ibuprofen can help too. Dental wax on braces can alleviate irritation on the inner cheeks and lips.

Losing separators, used to create space between teeth for molar bands, is not uncommon. While not an urgent concern, contact our Fargo office to determine if a replacement is necessary.

Braces may worsen pre-existing mouth sores. Apply a small amount of topical anesthetic (e.g., Orabase or Ora-Gel) to relieve discomfort. Reapply as needed for quick relief.

Should a bracket fall off, save it in a Ziploc bag and contact our Fargo office. If a bracket is loose but still attached to the wire, apply dental wax and schedule a visit for repair.

Wires may occasionally poke and irritate cheeks. Apply wax or push the wire down using a pencil eraser for relief.

If a wire becomes severely bent or dislodged from brackets, try placing it back with tweezers or clip it behind the last securely tied tooth. Use wax for comfort and call our office for assistance.

If you lose an aligner tray, contact us immediately. Each treatment plan is unique, and solutions may vary between patients.

Attachments help your aligner trays fit correctly and move your teeth throughout treatment. If an attachment is displaced or broken, it may extend treatment time.

Contact us promptly so we can determine if it needs to be addressed.

This situation is rare but alarming. Stay calm and assess your breathing.

If you can see the piece and remove it safely, do so.

If you believe you've swallowed it, contact Dr. Duevel or Dr. Keim immediately. We'll advise you on the best course of action.
