Your Tried & True Orthodontic Solution

At Fargo Orthodontics, we believe that metal braces are still an excellent choice for most of our patients.

Modern Braces for Modern Smiles

For decades, metal braces have been the go-to orthodontic treatment for millions of people worldwide. They’re reliable, effective and offer a straightforward solution to a range of orthodontic problems.

Metal braces, also known as traditional braces, are an orthodontic treatment that uses brackets, wires, and bands to gradually straighten teeth and correct bite issues.

The brackets we use at Fargo Orthodontics are made of high-grade stainless steel and attached to the front of your teeth using dental adhesive. A wire is then threaded through the brackets and held in place with small elastic bands.

What Are Braces Made of?

Metal braces are made of high-quality stainless steel because it's strong, durable, and corrosion-resistant. The brackets, archwire, and other components of metal braces work together to shift teeth into their proper positions over time. Here's how each one works:

Brackets

Brackets are small metal or gold-plated pieces that Dr. Duevel or Dr. Keim attaches to your teeth using a special adhesive. They serve as anchors for the archwire, which runs through them and applies gentle pressure to move the teeth into straighter positions.

The brackets we use for metal braces at Fargo Orthodontics are smaller and less noticeable than they used to be, thanks to advancements in orthodontic technology. Brackets are available in different shapes and sizes to accommodate different malocclusions and your personal preferences.

Elastics

Elastics, also known as rubber bands, apply additional pressure to the teeth and help correct bite issues. They come in a variety of colors and are often used in combination with metal braces.

Archwire

The archwire is a thin, flexible wire that runs through the brackets and applies pressure to the teeth. It is responsible for most of the movement of the teeth during orthodontic treatment.

The archwire is attached to the brackets using elastic ligatures, small rubber bands that come in different colors.

Other Components

In addition to brackets, archwires, and elastics, metal braces may also involve other components, such as spacers or separators, that create space between the teeth before your orthodontist places your braces.

You may also have small metal or plastic buttons, called buccal tubes, attached to the molars to help anchor the archwire.

Metal braces are a highly effective treatment option that can correct even the most severe dental issues. Proper care and maintenance can help you get straighter, healthier teeth and a beautiful smile that you can show off for a lifetime.

How Do Braces Work?

Metal braces work by applying gentle pressure to the teeth over some time. This pressure gradually moves the teeth into their correct positions.

Dr. Duevel or Dr. Keim periodically tightens or replaces the wire that runs through the brackets to ensure the teeth move in the right direction. Adjusting the wire is painless, although you may experience mild discomfort or soreness after each adjustment.

Go Gold

A Bolder Approach to Braces

Gold braces are a type of metal braces that are made from gold-plated stainless steel. They offer the same orthodontic benefits as traditional metal braces but have a more aesthetic appeal due to their gold color.
